Siobhan – We bought an Outwell tent (it’s a Michigan 6). It’s enormous when you are used to a little three man tent! But it is perfect for us, I would recommend it. It makes all the difference having a big tent that you can stand up in. Not only is there space to play inside if (or should that be, when) it rains but also to dry all the wet coats and towels that you end up with. We’ve taken it away a few times this summer and it works well – especially now there are three children in it. The twins sleep on mats with sleeping bags and the baby in a travel cot, and there is still plenty of space. Assuming you are the Siobhan I know from twins club(!), you are welcome to borrow it for a weekend if you want to try it out? Or if you prefer you could just borrow it to put up in the park to have a look? Either way, good luck finding a tent you like so you can get out camping with your gang soon!

Hi Alex – interested to know what type of tent you bought.. we’re thinking of buying one in the sales but haven’t done any research on it. Have a 3 man which was fine when we only had the twins & they were small but it’s not going to cut it anymore .. Our first camping trip with them was a disaster, they just wouldn’t stay still in the tent, eventually we had to sleep them in their buggy in the porch bit for the night. Anyway , determined to turn them in to campers, whatever it takes!

Impressive camping with such young children. We’ve been annually since our girls were one and a half. Sleeping wasn’t great on the first trip as blacking out a tent was not really feasible. The following year we all slept in the same room in the tent as it saves us getting up in the night to settle someone. Our improvements for next trip are to reduce the amount of bedding as we always seem to be fighting to get everything in the car. If you want to try camping I recommend the Cool Camping books to find a special place.
